Love Yourself Like Your Dog Loves You
I’ve had dogs my entire life, but Meeka was the first one I could call my own. Meeka is a rescue who was beaten as a puppy then neglected for the majority of her life. I adopted her when she was 5. She was terrified of people. I spent an hour and a half at her foster home, and the only time she would come near me was to quickly grab a treat before running away. Still, my gut told me she was the companion for me. I took her home and she was so nervous she wouldn’t eat, drink, or come near anyone. I wanted so badly to hug…

5 Reasons You Should Face Your Fears
Many of Our Fears Are Irrational Sure, some of our worst nightmares stem from survival instincts and things that are actually dangerous. For example, I am absolutely disgusted by big, hairy spiders with their beady eyes that look like they want to eat you! It is reasonable to be scared of the spiders who could potentially kill me, although it also takes every ounce of courage I can muster up to kill some spiders that are of absolutely no threat to me. That’s irrational. One day I was at an exotic pet expo and they had a tarantula there. Growing up I couldn’t even look at tarantulas because they made…

8 Ways to Incorporate Fitness Into Your Day with an Injury
Injuries SUCK! That’s a simple matter of fact. I went from working out 5-6 days a week to not being able to lift weights or do much of any cardio for the last 4 1/2 months due to injuries from a car accident. I now suffer from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, so I have nerve pain down my right arm, and I’m not supposed to lift it above 90 degrees because my blood supply becomes compressed and my arm goes numb/tingly. I also have problems with my neck and lower back, so I am limited as to what I can do. It was very frustrating not being able to perform daily…

7 Ways to Keep Your Pup Mentally Stimulated in Winter Weather
When I adopted Meeka my grandma bought me a Christmas ornament that held Meeka’s picture and said, “Rescue is my favorite breed” And I feel like this could not be more true. I love all kinds of dogs, but I’ve noticed that my strongest bonds have been with dogs we’ve rescued. It’s amazing how even after all they’ve been through, they are still willing to give their heart to their new family. And the joy and love you share is indescribable. So, naturally, we decided to rescue another, although this time it was a pup. The thing is, we adopted in one of the coldest months of our lovely Canadian…

The Day I Met Meeka
The Day I Met Meeka My entire life has revolved around pets; most notably, dogs. I am one of those types of people who sees an animal suffering in the wild (even a squirrel) and I want to run and help it, whether it could kill me or not. It is safe to say I am an animal lover. From a young age I have considered my dogs to be members of my family. They listen to me, try to cheer me up, get INCREDIBLY excited when I come home, and show me the true meaning of unconditional love. When I had to move away for University, there were a…

Our Household Entertainment
Meeka Hi! My name is Meeka and I’m a German Shepherd/Husky. I am almost 7 years old, but people who meet me think I’m still a pup. They also love to stare at my eyes since my right one is blue and my left one is brown with a blue chunk; apparently this makes me unique or something. I am a rescue and have been through some rough times, but I love my family more than anything and would do anything for them. I quickly established an amazing bond with my mom when she adopted me, and I like to stick by her side. I get a little nervous around…
